WINSLOW HOMER

Dear Parents,

For the next several weeks, we will be preparing pieces of art for our annual art show which will be on Sunday, April 5th from 12-3. This week we started an art project influenced by Winslow Homer's painting entitled, "Girl on a Swing (1897)."

Winslow Homer was an American painter born in Boston, MA on February 24th, 1836.  He was a realist painter who started out his career painting illustrations in magazines.  He continued his career painting war-like scenes, seascapes, and pictures of rural life.

To start the painting, the children first wet their canvases with a spray bottle.  Then, they painted water colors in horizontal strokes.  When it dried, the children painted a tree and leaves with acrylic paints.  Then, we glued on an adorable picture of each child sitting on a swing.  They look so amazing!

In Ms. Lisa's music class, the children practiced passing the ball around the circle as a warm up.  They walked around a circle quietly or loudly as Ms. Lisa played her drum.  Ms. Lisa chose a few friends to play the glockenspiel while the others stretched up (when the notes went high) and bent down to the floor (when the notes went low.)  We concluded our class singing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider."

The letter of the week was "R." We practiced writing the letter in our workbooks.  The children came up with several "R" words, such as:  red, rake, Ruby, Riya, and rabbit.

Other fun areas in the classroom:

"We love our new sandbox"
