NUTRITION/DENTAL WEEK

 Dear Parents,

This week we continued our Nutrition Unit by reading the Dairy Group Book, by Megan Borgert-Spaniol.  The children then created a dairy page for their "Food Group Booklet." Some of the dairy products they included were: yogurt, ice cream, milk, cottage cheese, and sour cream.

"Sally the cow" was our special visitor for the day.  The children each took turns milking the cow.  They were so excited about the blow up cow that they kept walking over to her and staring at her.  One child even patted her.

We practiced and sounded out the letter "Y" this week.  Some of the words the children came up with for this letter were:   Y is for yawn, yarn, and Yak.  Y is for yo-yo that goes down and comes back.

The children made a Healthy Food Plate placemats by adding pictures and stickers from each food group.  We also added a picture of each child drinking a cup of milk, for the dairy group.

Other fun areas in the classroom:

On Thursday we learned about "Dental Health." We introduced our “ unit by reading Peppa Pig's Trip to the Dentist, by, Scholastic Inc. and Sugar Bug Doug, by Ben Magleby.  We then had a discussion about good dental hygiene. We practiced brushing our teeth and flossing, using a dental teeth model. We learned a new tooth brushing song ~Brush, brush your teeth, gently up and down.  Visit your dentist twice a year and you won't have a frown.

We also made our own set of teeth.  The children spread Wow butter (from the protein group) onto apple slices, and finally added cubes of apples (from the fruit group).  They put it all together and voila! a set of teeth!

On Thursday we celebrated Saint Patrick's day by making shamrock necklaces.

HAPPY  ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

On Friday we had a discussion about the importance of physical activity.  Some of the activities the children participated this week were:
~Hula hooping
~The Hokey Pokey
~Running in place
~Hopping
~Creative movement to "Animal Action" song CD
~Exercising to"ExerSongs"  fitness CD

On Friday we concluded our week by making home made strawberry ice cream. We used fresh strawberries, milk, cream, vanilla and a little extra fine sugar.   The reason we made ice cream was because we filled our gem jar.  Ask your child about it.

Love,
Ms. Bonne and Ms. Mallari
