ALL ABOUT PENGUINS!

Dear Parents,

This week we went on an amazing "journey" to Antarctica to visit the penguins.  The children learned several facts about penguins such as: Penguins can't fly but can swim under water. There are 17 different species of penguins.  The largest penguins is 4 feet tall (emperor penguin) and the smallest is 16 inches tall (the little blue penguin).  Some of the stories the children enjoyed listening to were: About Penguins, by Cathryn Sill,  Without You, by Sarah Weeks and "Where is Home, Little Pip?, by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman.

After reading about penguins, the children created their own.  First they painted egg cartons, then cut out wings, added feet and a beak.
Finally, They glued them all together to make an adorable penguin colony, which even included snow and icicles.

In Ms. Lisa’s class, the children continued learning about piano vs. forte. The children played their bells softly when the music was quiet and played them loudly when the music became louder. Each child also had a turn playing the  xylophone. They played the melody of “Rain rain go away come again some other day.” While the music was playing, the children tapped their knees to the beat.

On Monday, Ms. Peishuan read a book called Banana. It was about two monkeys and one of them who didn’t want to share their banana it until the very end. The only word in the book was "banana" so the children had a lot of practice saying the word in Mandarin. Some of the words Ms. Peishuan  introduced to the children were:
香蕉
xiāng jiāo
banana 🍌

蘿蔔
luó bo
carrot 🥕

球
qiú
ball

氣球
qì qiú
Balloon 🎈

美式足球
Měi shì zú qiú
American football 🏈

足球
zú qiú
soccer ⚽️

籃球
lán qiú
basketball 🏀

棒球
bàng qiú
baseball ⚾️

Throughout the week, the children have been working on various penguin themed math activities.  The children finished penguin patterns, matched a group of penguins to a number, counted penguins while practicing writing their numbers. Take a look at our Math bulletin board to see all of their amazing work.

Love,

Ms. Bonne and Ms. Denise
