Dear Parents,
This week we introduced our dinosaur unit. We read several dinosaur themed books such as: Dinosaur Mommy, Have You Seen My Dinosaur?, Dinosaurs!, I'm Not, and Danny and the Dinosaur.
We learned some interesting facts about dinosaurs:
*lived 55 million years ago.
*there are 700 kinds of dinosaurs
*are reptiles so that had scaly skin like iguanas.
*laid eggs
*only lived on land.
Some dinosaurs were as small as a chicken and ran quickly on two legs while other large dinosaurs walked slowly on four legs.
Dinosaurs that ate only meat are called carnivores. Dinosaurs that ate only plants are called herbivores. Omnivores are dinosaurs that each both.
The children pretended to be paleontologists by digging for dinosaur fossils in sand.
We made our own "dinosaur dinoramas." The children painted a sky, a tree, clouds and rocks. We finished it off by adding sand and dinosaurs. What a fantastic job they did!
On Thursday we constructed a volcano out of paper mache. We inserted a plastic tube inside and poured vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring. The children screamed with excitement when the volcano erupted!
On Friday, the children made their own salt dough using salt, flour, and water After we mixed the dough, the children each were given a piece, flattened it out, and cut them out of a cookie cutter. The children then chose a dinosaur to stamp into their dough to make fossils. We all had such a fun time together! If you want to make the dough at home, all you need to do is, mix up:
1 1/2 flour
3/4 cups of salt
3/4 cups of water
The dough will need to be air dried overnight.
So far, we've practiced the following straight lined letters: L,E,F,H, and I. Now the children are moving on to curved letters. The first curved letter we learned is "U."
The children practiced writing the letter, sounding it out and they came up with a few words that begin with "U" such as: up, under, unicorn, umbrella, and upside down.
Reminder:
We will have no school on Wednesday, November 11th for Veteran's Day.
Have a great weekend!
Love,
Ms. Bonne & Ms. Denise
