PABLO PICASSO AND SYMMETRY

Dear Parents,

This week we continued to learn about Pablo Picasso.  We learned that he:

~ Painted in blue and red~Painted many pictures of himself and made,      some with two noses

~ Loved his dogs so much that he made many paintings of them

~ We also looked at some of his paintings which included many           different different squares and rectangles, known as cubism.

We were inspired by Picasso's paintings and decided to make our own original portraits.  First, we took pictures of each child.  Then, we cut them in half. We took the second half and cut it in different shapes. The children put the pieces back together and the results were spectacular!

Our next lesson was on symmetry.  We learned that if you fold something in half and if both sides look the same, it is symmetrical.  For example,  folding a square or circle in half.  When we fold the L and K in half, we all agreed that both sides were not the same, or in other words not symmetrical.

Math:

We continued to practice addition by using a ten-frame on the magnet board using red and blue circles.  The children filled the top row with red circles, added them up, and then wrote down the correct number.  The children did the same in the second row and then added them all together.

In addition to counting and adding we also learned how to subtract   (5 - 1 = 4, 10 - 0 = 10) by using small colored blocks.

On Wednesday we celebrated St. Patrick's Day and learned many facts about Ireland and the traditions of the holiday.  We read Ten Lucky Leprechauns by Kathryn Heling.

In honor of the holiday, we made a few fun festive art projects.  The first project that we made were rainbow mobiles.  The children painted a rainbow onto a paper plate.  When it dried, the children cut them out in a spiral and added stickers.  We attached a few shamrocks at the end and string on top.  They looked spectacular!  The children also decorated a large shamrock with small decorative green squares.

"Mrs. B, someone peed green in the toilet!"

For snack, we had delicious cake pops and green bagels with butter and cream cheese.  Thank you to Daniel's thoughtful grandmother for making the yummy cake pops.

On Thursday, we made made our self-portraits.  The children did such an amazing job and they cannot wait to show them to you at the art show.

Friday was Zachary's 4th birthday party.  Happy Birthday Zack! Thank you to his family for bringing in cupcakes and party favors!

We recently filled up our gem jar by having "cotton ball" behavior so we celebrated by having an ice cream party last Thursday. Cotton ball behavior is when we say or do something that makes others feel good. Some examples are: helping a friend, using polite words, and listening to the teachers.  First, we crushed Oreo cookies and then mixed it with cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla. We mixed all the ingredients into an ice cream maker until it was finished.   The children sprinkled yummy toppings and ate their sundaes with smiles on their faces.

Fun in the Classroom:

Notes from Ms. Peishuan:
We review the fruits in mandarin and introduce new words about some instruments.
In Zoom, they saw butterflies landing on Ms.Peishuan's hair, face and nose. We talked about the number and color. Also, Ms. Peishuan was a banana, strawberry, watermelon, apple..on the screen. Ask your child about it, silly Ms. Peishuan.

Here is a funny video of one of our classmates lifting weights!

Have a wonderful weekend!
