Dear Parents,
This week we learned about the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). He was a pioneer of abstract art and is known for his inventive used of color and for his representations of music through art. His famous works include: Composition VIII, Fugue, and Several Circles. We were so inspired by his painting, Composition VIII that we decided to create our own version of it.
The children created several different designs by using a pencil and a ruler. Next, they added a variety of colorful shapes and textures to their papers. What an incredible job they did!
We also read several books about Wassily Kandinsky.
The letter of the week was "K." We practiced writing the letter in our workbooks and came up with several K words such as: Kite, Kavya, King, Kangaroo, and Koala.
Fun in the Classroom:
We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday on Tuesday. The children colored a Dr. Seuss striped hat, wrote their name, and a few rhyming words such as Cat, Fat, Rat, Sat, bat, and Mat. We added strips to make them into hats, they look so cute! During the week we read: Cat in the Hat, Are You My Mother?, There's a Wocket in My Pocket, and Wacky Wednesday.
On Thursday we celebrated Maddie's 4th birthday. Happy Birthday Maddie!! Thank you to her family for bringing in yummy cupcakes and fruit!
On Wednesday, we started our Antoni Gaudi mosaic project for the art show. Antoni Gaudi was a Spanish architect who was the pioneer of Catalan modernism. Most of his unique works are located in Barcelona, Spain. La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo, and Parc Guell are some of his famous works. Most of his work is made up of colorful mosaics with broken tiles, plates, and cups.
The children colored white tiles with sharpies and then they sprayed alcohol on top. The colors began to mix together and made the most incredible designs. They look magnificent! We glued them on to a piece of foam core and added hammered pieces of colored tiles. We glued them around the large tiles.
Here is our finished mosaic:
Have a great weekend!
Love,
Ms. Bonne & Ms. Denise
