ALL ABOUT APPLES!

Dear Parents,

Since fall is approaching, we are learning all about apples.  We introduced our unit by reading The Biggest Apple Ever.  We started our week with a taste test of three different kinds of apples: macintosh, granny smith, and red delicious.  The children each tasted all three apples and then decided which one was their favorite. They then colored in a slot on the apple graph with the picture of their favorite apple. I guess the consensus was that the red delicious apple was the number one choice.

We also enjoyed listening to the "Apple Story," which is a story about a little boy who was sent out by his mother to find a red house with no doors, no windows, and a star inside.  Ask your child about it (a copy of the story will be placed in your child's backpack).  Some of the other stories the children enjoyed listening to were: Seeds to Apple, by Anita Ganeri and How do Apples Grow, by Betsy Maestro.

On Tuesday, the children learned about the life cycle of an apple.  They have been practicing putting the life cycle pictures onto the velcro board.  The order of the life cycle starts with a seed, seedling, tree, bud, flower, and finally the apple.

We did a variety of activities that involve patterns this week.  One of the activities that we did, was making our own apple patterns.  The children glued red, yellow, and green apple cutouts onto their papers to create different patterns of their own.  They were so proud of themselves and so were we!

We concluded our week by creating apple trees.  First the children
painted tree tops with green paint, using a loofah sponge.  Then, they painted a tree trunk template brown and glued on various nature items to it such as leaves, twigs, and branches (which we collected on our nature walk).  They finished off their trees by gluing the tree top to the trunk of the tree and then added various colored apples to it.  The results were spectacular!

We look forward to learning about Rosh Hashanah ( the Jewish New Year).

Shabbat Shalom,
Bonne and Keisha
