Preparing for Purim and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday

Dear Parents,

This week we learned about the Purim holiday.  Purim comes in early spring and recalls the bravery of a young Queen Esther. Children and adults celebrate this holiday by wearing costumes and giving gifts (mishloach manot) to family and friends. An important part of Purim is to hear the reading of the megillah, a scroll containing the story, and to make noise with groggers whenever we hear the name of the villain Haman. Hamantaschen, pastries shaped like Haman’s three cornered hat, are a favorite holiday treat. Parties, parades, and carnivals are also part of the celebration.

We read the story of Queen Esther, using puppets.

We made baskets to fill up with Hamantaschen and give to a loved one.

We made groggers by decorating plastic cups and filling them with beads.

'The children created Dr. Seuss's hat by cutting out a hat template and decorating it with red and white stripes and then writing rhyming words on it.  (in honor Dr Seuss's birthday, on March 2nd).

On Wednesday, our class made Hamantaschen filled with jam and chocolate chips.

On Thursday, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by making  green eggs and jam on toast. The children had so much making it.  They each had a turn cracking open an egg.  Mmm... was it delicious breakfast!

On Friday, we had a curl up and read day with our mommies after Shabbat. Thank you so much for making our Friday extra special. What a great way to conclude our fun filled week!

Have a great weekend!
Love,
Bonne & Denise
