Dear Parents,
This week we learned about the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). We introduced the artist by reading The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky's Abstract Art (The Noisy Paint Box).
We learned that he was a pioneer of abstract art and is known for his inventive use of color and for his representations of music through art. His famous works include: Composition VIII, Fugue, and Several Circles. We were so inspired by his painting, Composition VIII that we decided to create our own version of it.
The children created several different designs by using a Sharpie and a ruler. Next, they added a variety of colorful shapes and textures to their papers. They did an incredible job!
We also celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut or Israel Independence Day this week by making Israeli flags and cupcakes. We frosted them and add a Star of David. They were delicious!
We took a trip to Israel on Thursday and made our own special passports by gluing on pictures of Israel and stamping the Star of David inside.
The entire school joined together to sing the Israeli national anthem and paraded around while waving our flags. Each class took turns celebrating Israeli culture in the multipurpose room. The children shopped for fruit and toys in the shouk, which is Hebrew for an open market. We had a Western Wall for the children to put their handwritten notes on. The children went on a camel ride, they made hummus, and searched for shells in the water! We had such an amazing trip and we can't wait to go back!
Shabbat Shalom!
Bonne and Denise
