THANKSGIVING CONTINUED!

Dear Parents,

This week we are continuing to learn about the Thanksgiving holiday.  We started by making our very own Thanksgiving placemats.  The children finger painted leaves onto a tree in red, green, and yellow paint. Then, the teachers painted the children's left hand with brown, green, yellow, and orange paint and stamped it onto their paper.  The children added legs, a beak, a snood, and grass with magic markers.  They look incredibly festive! We will use them the day of our Thanksgiving potluck and afterwards, the children can take them home.

On Wednesday, Riya's mom visited our classroom to teach the class about the holiday, Diwali. Diwali is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year.  She read from a book called, Diwali! by Richard Sebra.

We learned that Diwali is a festival of lights that is celebrated in October or November lasting for five days.  People celebrate by putting diyas out which are oil lamps or candles.  Families eat plenty of sweets and give gifts to each other.  Special rangoli patterns are made on the floor out of rice, dry flour, colored sand, and or flower petals.  Riya's mom gave each child a rangoli patterned paper to decorate and brought in delicious cupcakes for our snack.  A special thank you to Riya's mom for taking the time to teach us about Diwali.  We learned so much!

The letter of the week is "O."  The children practiced writing the letter in their workbooks and sounded the letter out.  They also  came up with several words that start with "O" such as:  octopus, orange, open, oval, and otter.

Notes from Peishuan:

Ms. Lisa's music class:
This week, we sang several fun Fall/Thanksgiving themed songs such as:  Autumn Leaves Are Falling Down, We Eat Turkey, and Over the River and Through the Woods.  The children also practiced rest position with the foam violins.

Reminder:  We will be having our Thanksgiving school concert and potluck on Wednesday, November 27th.  The concert will start at 11:30 with a potluck to follow.  School will close at 1PM that day.

Have a great weekend!

Love,

Ms. Boodman & Ms. Drago
