This week we continued our Thanksgiving unit. We read One Little, Two Little Pilgrims, by B.G. Hennessy and The Story of the Pilgrims, by Katharine Ross. We then had a great discussion about the meaning of Thanksgiving. We learned that we celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November by having a feast. We came up with a list of traditional foods we eat on Thanksgiving such as: turkey stuffing, rice, squash, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie.
The children were surprised when they discovered that Native Americans did not have stoves but cooked their meals outside on a fire. They were also amazed when they found out that they didn't have supermarkets back then. The Native Americans hunted and fished for their food and bathed and washed in the river.
The children created fabulous Native American villages. ; color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "utopia" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino" , serif; font-size: large;">They made colorful teepees and added straws on the top (representing branches). The children made a river by painting with corn syrup and blue food coloring, and they even added fish stickers to it. The children designed a campfire by gluing on pebbles and red, yellow, orange, and gold tissue paper onto it (representing fire). They finished their village by adding Native Americans made out of clay.
We celebrated Maya's 4th birthday this week. Happy Birthday Maya!! Her parents came in and brought in delicious treats and read one of Maya's favorite stories. A special thank you to Maya's parents for bringing in the delicious treats and for sharing a great story.

Officer Matthew (Jayden's dad) came to the school to talk about what he does for his work. He asked the children what police officers do, they said: put bad guys in jail, help people, and direct traffic. Then we had a discussion about when and why to call 9-1-1. Officer Matthew was kind enough to invite the children to sit on top of his police motorcycle. They had so much fun.

The letter of the week was "Q." We practiced writing the letter in our workbooks and sounded it out. The children came up with several "Q" words such as: quarterback, quack, quilt, quit, quiet and queen.

Have a great weekend!
