Dear Parents,
This week we learned all about bees and ladybugs. We started our week off learning about ladybugs. Here are some facts about ladybugs:
-Ladybugs are beetles
-There are 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs
-They come in red, yellow, orange, brown, pink, and all black
-Some have spots and some have stripes
-They eat small bugs called aphids
-They hibernate in the winter
-They have 2 sets of wings
-They have bright colors to warn attackers that they will taste terrible
We loved learned about ladybugs so much that we decided to make our own. The children first tore green pieces of paper to make the grass. They glued the grass onto their paper and then stamped bottle caps into red paint to make the ladybugs. When they dried, the children colored black dots, made legs, and a head.
On Wednesday, we learned all about bees. Here are some of the facts that we learned:
-Bees live everywhere except for Antarctica
-Some bees are endangered
-They feed on nectar and pollen and make honey
-Each hive has a queen bee, many worker bees, and drones.
-Worker bees are all females. They collect all the pollen and nectar
-Queen bees lay all the eggs and can lay up to 2,000 eggs a day!
We made our own bees this week. First we painted a piece of cardboard in the shape of a bee hive. Then, the children made their own bees by gluing googly eyes and wings on a pair of yellow pom poms. They wrapped a black pipe cleaner around the body and made antennas.
Fun at school:
Have a wonderful weekend!
Love,
Ms. Bonne & Ms. Denise
